Today is Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Truth = what actually happened

Reconciliation = making things right

There is no reconciliation without recovering the truth, admitting the grievous sins committed, and stating the harm done exactly as it is without concealing or exaggeration.

There is also no way forward if there is no humility or any openness to reconcile, even if one has all the truth. Reconcile means to re-“concile”, to be brought back together again, to restore friendly relations in between.

Truth and Reconciliation belong together. There needs to be courage, humility, and contrite hearts committed to truth and justice, forgiveness and reconciliation.

The good news is, God already took the costly first step through Christ, reconciling the world to himself and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:18-21). On this firm foundation, let us proclaim truth and foster reconciliation wherever we are.
